Some destinations have great scenery. Others offer quality fishing. A few places provide peaceful solitude. Vallecito Lake has it all.

Just 15 miles northeast of Durango, Colo. Vallecito Lake is a beautiful body of water surrounded by the San Juan Mountains. The fact there are plenty of civilized places to hang out around the lake draws many people who aren’t real interested in sleeping with the bears. But for those who prefer to rough it a bit, there are lots of opportunities. Whether your goal is to hit the trail with a backpack and lose the crowds, or sit in a hot tub with a group of people sipping refreshments, you can reach your goal as well as enjoy the wide variety of activities available.

The Vallecito Chamber of Commerce can guide visitors toward lodging, food, entertainment, services and amenities. The biggest draw, other than the raw beauty, is the cooler summer temperatures and the lake. Large enough for water-skiers and personal watercraft, the lake is a popular summer hangout. But fishing is still one of the biggest draws. Anglers cast for trophy-sized northern pike, kokanee salmon and trout.

Two full-service marinas are available to cater to boaters. If you don’t have a boat, rentals are available.

Not far to the north and east is the Weminuche Wilderness. Great trout fishing in the Pine River and Vallecito River. Among other destinations are three nontechnical 14,000-foot peaks. Elk, bear, and deer are plentiful in the area. Because Vallecito is a resort community, you won’t find Motel 6 prices, but not all cabins are for the rich and famous, either.
